Saving the Pensions of Ohio Workers and Retirees

When Wall Street gambled away workers’ retirement savings, Sherrod led the years-long fight to pass the Butch Lewis Act – which successfully saved the pensions of over 100,000 Ohioans. Sherrod named the bill after Butch Lewis, an Ohio Teamster.

Standing Against Bad Trade Deals

Sherrod has always stood up to presidents of both parties against bad trade deals.

  • Sherrod opposed NAFTA and worked with President Trump to renegotiate it.
    • Sherrod opposed President Obama on the Trans-Pacific Partnership.
    • Sherrod worked with former Senator Rob Portman to secure significant Buy
      America provisions in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Package.
    • Sherrod is also leading the fight against the Biden Administration’s policy that
      boosts solar panel manufacturing in China and is working to bring that production
      – and the jobs associated with it – home.
    • Sherrod also successfully pushed the Biden Administration to pull out of the trade pillar of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework to protect workers from unfair
      labor standards.
    • Sherrod introduced the Fighting Trade Cheats Act to allow American
      manufacturers to fight back against bad actors.
    • Sherrod introduced the Leveling the Playing Field 2.0 Act to bolster trade remedy
      laws and protect American workers from unfair trade practices.
    • Sherrod is speaking out against Nippon’s acquisition of U.S. Steel as part of his
      ongoing fight to keep jobs in America.

Championing Our Causes

  • Sherrod led the Fair Warning Act to require employers to give workers a fair warning
    before layoffs or closures.
  • Sherrod sponsored the Wage Theft Prevention and Wage Recovery Act to ensure
    workers aren’t cheated out of the paychecks they have earned.
  • Sherrod introduced the Part-Time Worker Bill of Rights Act to expand pension and family
    leave benefits and give part-time workers more control over their schedule.
  • Sherrod introduced the Advancing Auto-Portability Act to allow a 401k savings account
    to automatically roll over to a worker’s new job.
  • Sherrod sponsored the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act to protect pregnant workers and
    ensure they’re treated fairly on the job.
  • Sherrod secured $25 million for the National Labor Relations Board to ensure they have
    the necessary resources for organization efforts.
  • Sherrod introduced the Restoring Overtime Pay Act to enshrine overtime pay protections
    into law and expand who qualifies for overtime pay so millions more Americans are paid
    for the hours they work.

Putting Workers First

Sherrod has always stood up for workers at the bargaining table and during employer disputes.

  • Sherrod joined the United Auto Workers strike to fight for fair wages.
  • Last year, Sherrod successfully urged Ultium Cells to increase wages and safety
    precautions for workers.
  • Sherrod called out Amazon for their mistreatment of delivery drivers. Sherrod
    also led an investigation into Amazon’s workplace labor practices.
  • Sherrod led a group of nearly thirty Senators to urge UPS to reach a contract with
    the International Brotherhood of Teamsters that included fair wages, better
    working conditions, and dignified retirement.
  • Sherrod led a group of Senators to push the Starbucks CEO to support the
    nationwide unionization efforts.
  • Sherrod urged the Cleveland Clinic’s Lutheran Hospital to reach a fair agreement
    with hospital workers represented by the Service Employees International Union.
  • Sherrod visited IAM Local 1363 automotive mechanics on the strike line to
    support their fight against retirement cuts and push for a fair contract.
  • Sherrod pushed Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center leadership to return to
    the bargaining table and agree on a fair contract for nurses and technical staff.
    He visited the 1,900 striking members of hospital staff on the picket line to show
    his support for reaching an agreement.
  • Sherrod pushed General Motors to remain in Lordstown and called on them to
    use recent tax cuts to protect Ohio jobs.
  • Sherrod supported the Columbus Education Association’s decision to strike while
    fighting for smaller class sizes and enhanced curriculum.
  • Sherrod introduced the Educators Expense Deduction Modernization Act to quadruple
    the tax deductions teachers can use for school expenses to put more money back in
    their pockets.
  • Sherrod testified at an International Trade Commission hearing to fight for Ohio
    steelworkers and protect the steel industry from unfair trade practices.
  • Sherrod sponsored the No Tax Breaks for Union Busting Act, which requires employers
    to report their efforts to influence employees in regards to labor organizations.
  • For over a decade, Sherrod has partnered with organizations and labor unions to host
    Summer Manufacturing Camps to teach young Ohioans about the manufacturing
    industry. Sherrod created the Manufacturing Camps to educate local students about the
    range of jobs within the industry.
  • Sherrod introduced the Nurse Staffing Standards for Hospital Patient Safety and Quality
    Care Act to implement nurse-to-patient ratio requirements and whistleblower protections
    so nurses can advocate for their patients without fear of retaliation.
  • Sherrod voted to confirm Marty Walsh, a union member, as the Secretary of Labor. He
    also voted to confirm a union attorney to the General Counsel of the National Labor
    Relations Board.
